Kun Khmer, Cambodia's ancient martial art, is preparing for what observers are calling a historic global breakthrough. A series of recent international agreements, federation expansions, and tournament announcements signal that 2026 may be the year the sport finally takes its rightful place on the world stage.

The Kun Khmer International Federation (KIF), under the leadership of Khov Chhay, has spent the past several months building a network of partnerships across continents. From Belgium and France to Korea, Russia, and beyond, the federation has methodically secured agreements aimed at growing the sport's global infrastructure.

Federation-Led Expansion

Among the most significant developments is the partnership between the Kun Khmer Federation and the World Kickboxing Network (WKN), an organization with reach in over 100 countries. The collaboration is designed to elevate Kun Khmer's visibility and competitive presence on a truly global scale.

Closer to home, the federation has announced a tripartite partnership with AEON Mall Mean Chey and Vattanac Brewery to establish a dedicated Kun Khmer training centre in Phnom Penh — a permanent presence in one of the city's most heavily trafficked locations.

What This Means

For decades, Cambodia's martial arts community has watched as Muay Thai dominated international markets and global recognition. Kun Khmer — older, equally rich in technique, and with deep roots in Cambodian identity — operated largely in regional obscurity outside Southeast Asia.

That era appears to be ending. With international federations forming, world championships drawing competitors from a dozen nations, and figures like Eh Phuthong and the next generation of fighters earning coverage from international media, the sport is positioned for meaningful international growth.

For the first time in decades, the structures needed for global recognition are being built in parallel — federation partnerships, sanctioning bodies, training centres, and media coverage all moving forward at once.

The Road Ahead

Whether Kun Khmer can sustain this momentum depends on the federation's ability to coordinate across borders, develop fighters at the elite level, and continue building sponsor relationships at home and abroad. The 6th Kun Khmer World Championship — though postponed due to regional tensions — remains a major milestone on the horizon.

For Cambodian fighters, gym owners, and fans, the message is clear: the sport is moving. The question is no longer whether Kun Khmer will be recognized internationally, but how fast that recognition will arrive.
