France is preparing to host a Kun Khmer friendly tournament, marking another step in Cambodia's ongoing effort to expand the sport's footprint across Europe.

France has long been a center for Cambodian martial arts in Europe, home to the Fédération des Arts Martiaux Khmers (FAMK) and a substantial Cambodian diaspora community concentrated in Paris's 13th arrondissement and elsewhere.

Why France Has Mattered

France's relationship with Khmer martial arts is decades old. After the Khmer Rouge regime, many Cambodian masters fled to France, where they continued teaching and quietly preserving traditions that had been nearly extinguished at home. Those decades of underground continuity mean that France today has a rare combination — institutional knowledge, established federations, and a community deeply invested in the sport's future.

The friendly tournament is an opportunity for French Kun Khmer practitioners — many of them Cambodian-French — to compete on home soil with sanctioning and recognition from the Cambodian federation.

The Significance of "Friendly"

The friendly format matters. Friendlies allow nations to showcase their fighters, test rule sets, and build relationships without the high stakes of championship competition. They are how international combat sports infrastructure gets built in real time.

For French Kun Khmer practitioners, this is more than a tournament. It is recognition — of decades of preservation work that kept the art alive when Cambodia itself could not.

Looking Ahead

If the friendly succeeds, France-based events sanctioned by the Cambodian federation could become regular occurrences — providing both a platform for European fighters and a pathway for Cambodian fighters to compete abroad. That kind of continuity is what global sports require.

For now, organizers are finalizing details. But the message from both sides is consistent: Kun Khmer's future includes France, and France's Kun Khmer community is ready.
